Obituary - James S. Haring

James S. Haring of New York City, a former long-time resident of Ridgewood, died Tuesday in The Valley Hospital, Ridgewood, at the age of 78.

Born in Orangeburg, New York, Mr. Haring was the grandson of Colonel James Smith Haring, the officer in charge of the Rockland County Regiment during the Civil War. Mr. Haring's ancestor's ancestors were original settlers in Rockland County, in the early 1600's, and were active in the Revolutionary War as well as the Civil War.

Mr. Haring, a graduate of the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, was a professional engineer. For many years he was the valuation engineer for the Erie Railroad and at the outbreak of World War II became associated with the U. S. Navy in his capacity as engineer. He remained in the military service until his retirement about six years ago, where he was project manager at the U. S. Naval Ammunition Depot in Erie.

Funeral Services will be held today at 10 a.m. at the Sniffen Funeral Home, Spring Valley, New York. Interment will be in Rockland Cemetery, Sparkill, New York.

Surviving are two sons, James S. Haring IV of New York City and Robert Tracy Haring of Ridgewood; two daughters, Mrs. J. A. Nurmi (Elizabeth) of Lake Worth, Florida, and Mrs. J. T. (Marguerite) Bowers, Jr. of Ridgewood; and three grandchildren, Laurance [should be Lawrence], Thomas and Carole Nurmi.

His step mother stated that out of three children that were born to her, two are still living [Samuel Gormley Pollock "Pollock" and Graham Bell "Graham" are living. Her son Lloyd Everett 1899-1899 has died.]
