ALEXANDRIA — Janis K. Armstrong, 73, of Alexandria, died Monday, Sept. 7, 2009, Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie, after a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 1, 1936, to William Simmons and Olive (Kane) Simmons and has resided in Alexandria all of her lifetime.

Janis attended Alexandria schools. She has been employed in the program department at Hoosier Park in Anderson for the past 14 years. She attended the Liberty Grove Baptist Church in Anderson. Janis enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family, especially the grandkids. She was known as a great cook, but most importantly Janis was the "glue" that held her family together. She was always smiling and the twinkle in her eyes was her wonderful brightness that will be fondly and warmly remembered.

Survivors include her husband, Bob Armstrong, whom she married Aug. 14, 1954; three daughters, Debbie (Brad) Troxell of Anderson, Dee (Ellis) Owens and Toni (Jerry) Ankrom, all of Alexandria; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; grandson, Jeremy Ankrom; great-granddaughter, Leia Walsh.

Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Owens Funeral Home, 412 N. Harrison St., Alexandria, with Pastor Chris Russell of The Bridge Community Church in Anderson officiating. Interment will follow in Park View Cemetery in Alexandria.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure for Breast Cancer Research through the funeral home.
