Dale "Ole" Aykens, 81, Brainerd, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd.

He was born Feb. 25, 1921, in Dexter, Iowa, to Altman and Birdie (Worster) Aykens. They moved to Wadena and then to Brainerd. He attended school in Brainerd. He became employed at Potlatch. During World War II, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served in India as a mechanic. After his discharge, he returned to Brainerd. He married Betty Hall. She died in 1965. He married Beverly Peterson on May 29, 1967, in Brainerd. He retired from Potlatch as a machine operator after more than 43 years of service. He was a member of First Lutheran Church of Brainerd, the American Legion, the Quarter Century Club and the Potlatch Retirees.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Sandra Swearingen, Wendy Brown and Denise Anderson, all of Brainerd; two sons, Michael Holmes, Lake Park, Iowa, and Dale, Fulda; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

His first wife; two brothers, Donald and Wilford; a sister, Helen Kyar; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild, died earlier.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter with the Rev. Andrew Smith officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens with the Brainerd American Legion providing military honors.

Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Thursday and an hour before services Friday at the funeral chapel.
