The Press Democrat, Santa Rosa, Nov. 8, 1912: "WILLIAM O. CLARK,HERO OF BLACK HAWK WAR, DIES LAST NIGHT. Abraham Lincoln was his commander...Mr. Clark was a hero of the Black Hawk War fighting bravely in 1832 but when 17 years of age. For years he enjoyed the distinction of being the oldest war veteran in the U.S. As a result of his service in the Black Hawk War, Congress voted him a special pension. He was one of 16 children born to Timothy Baldwin Clark and Mary "Polly" Keeler, both natives of Connecticut.

His first wife, Julia Ruhamah Clark (nee Appleby, 1826-1886), his daughter Mary P. Clark (died 3/31/1870, aged 22 yrs.) and son Eugene S. Clark (died 8/23/1876, aged 23 years) are buried next to each other in Drytown Protestant Cemetery in Amador Co., Calif.
