COUSHATTA, LA - Services for Mr. Willis Porter Alexander of Coushatta, LA will be held at 1:30 P.M. Thursday, May 21, 2009 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Coushatta, LA with Rev. Randy Tisdale officiating and Rev. Buster Page assisting. Interment will follow in Mt. Zion Cemetery under the direction of Rockett-Nettles Funeral Home, Coushatta, LA. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 12:45 P.M. until service time at the church.

Mr. Alexander was born September 25, 1906 in Red River Parish. His parents were John Huey and Drucilla Alexander, and he was one of twelve children, all of whom are now deceased. He died peacefully in his sleep at Glenview Gardens in Bossier City, LA on Monday, May 18, 2009. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 73 years, Willie Mae "Bill" Bailey Alexander, who died in 2002, and by his son, Edwin P. Alexander, who died in 1986.

Mr. Alexander graduated from Hall Summit High School. He was a gifted athlete, playing quarterback on the football team, catcher on the baseball team, and point guard on the basketball team. He also ran track and held district records in both the high jump and the pole vault. After high school he attended Lynn Business School in Shreveport, LA. He married "Mrs. Bill" on December 20, 1928 in Hall Summit. They lived in Hall Summit, Ringgold, Homer, Alexandria, and Jonesboro, LA. He worked as parts manager and general manager at several automobile dealerships. In 1947, they moved to Cotton Valley, LA where they owned and operated Alexander Motor Sales (Oldsmobile). They retired and moved to the Mt. Zion Community, near Coushatta, in 1958, where he enjoyed raising cattle and farming. Mr. Alexander was a long-time member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where he served many years as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and Training Union leader. He worked on the Building Committees and served as President of the Cemetery Committee for many years. He was actively involved as a civic leader in the communities where they lived, including serving as President of the Athletic Association in Cotton Valley, President of the Cotton Valley Lions Club, and volunteering with the schools and the Boy Scouts. He was a member of the Order of the Masons, Ringgold Chapter.

Survivors include his son, Bill Alexander of Houston, TX; daughter-in-law, Kay Alexander (Mrs. Edwin) of Shreveport; four granddaughters, Laura Ann Alexander Sawyer and husband, Jay of Shreveport, LA, Leah Jane Alexander Anders and husband, Kerry of Monroe, LA, Tori Alexander Clements and husband, Teddy of Houston, TX, and Shay Alexander Hebert and husband, Slade of Houston, TX; nine great-grandchildren, Kent and Leslie Sawyer, Katie, Alex, Michael, and Caroline Anders, Ainzly and Rubi Clements, and Aspen Hebert; brother-in-law, Frank Bailey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Alexander was a man of honesty and integrity. He will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by his family, friends, church and community.

The family wishes to thank his dedicated sitters, Lauretha Shehee, Elzadia Miller, Tiffany Shehee, Amy Miller, Marilyn Miller, and Sharon Taylor, and to thank the staff of Glenview Gardens in Bossier City, where he resided for the last two years. We also wish to thank Dr. Robert Hernandez and the staff of Professional Home Health, including Lily Long, for their excellent care and compassion.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Kerry Anders, Jay Sawyer, Michael Anders, Teddy Clements, Slade Hebert, Frank Bailey, Myrle Carlisle, and Jack Harrison. Memorials may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church Building Fund, Rt. 1, Box 173-W, Coushatta, LA 71019.
