William Henry Haywood IV was born 1841 in Raleigh, Wake County, NC the 6th of 9 known surviving children (3 boys/6 girls) born to the Hon. William Henry Haywood III and his wife, Jane Graham.

He was the paternal grandson of William Henry Haywood II & Ann Sheppard of Raleigh; and gr-grandson of William Henry Haywood I & Charity Hare of Edgecombe Co, NC. He was the maternal grandson of Edward Graham of New Bern, Craven Co, NC.

William was just 11 when his father died, and about age 19 when the Civil War broke out. William joined the NC 7th Volunteers with both his brothers Edward and Duncan, where he rose to rank of Lieutenant. His brother Duncan was killed in battle at Cold Harbor in 1862.

William died in Vickersville, VA on May 5, 1864 of wounds received at the Battle of the Wilderness. He was only 22 years old.

His brother, Duncan, had died 2 years previously having been killed at the battle at Cold Harbor in 1862. His older brother, Edward, would survive and return to Raleigh following the war, but later removed with is family to Washington, DC.
