Winford Leo Cupples died April 29, 2007, in Eagar at the Friendship House with his close friends around him.

He was born in Mobeetie, Texas, April 2, 1935, to Salem Leo Cupples and Margaret Elizabeth Weaver. They moved to the Globe/Miami area in Arizona when Winford was an infant, and it's there that he was raised and spent a good portion of his life. He married Izora Faith Powel, and they raised four children in Globe and later in Pinetop.

He is survived by his son, Winford Leo Cupples Jr. and his spouse, Mary, and their three sons, Christopher Thomas, Jeremy Allen and Andrew Marcel Cupples; also son David Wayne Cupples; daughter Cheryl Yvonne Bentley, her son Michael, his wife Danette and their son, Tristen, and their daughter, Kindra; and another daughter of Cheryl, Jessica Lynn Cruz. Winford's youngest daughter Barbara Christine Brown and her spouse, Forest, with their son, R.J., and their daughter, Athena.

Winford served four years in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Florida, Mississippi and Japan. He was trained as an electronics technician specializing in radio and radar. He loved his time in Japan and grew to love its people.

After leaving the Air Force, Winford completed an apprenticeship in sheet metal fabrication with the mines in Globe. Winford and Izora went their separate ways in about 1984 and Winford moved to the Eagar area.

During that time he was employed by Brown and Root Construction serving as a general foreman of the Insulation/Sheet Metal Department constructing the Springerville Generating Station. He made many close friends while there. One in particular was Patty Orona whom he shared a very deep and lasting friendship. Winford loved the area and the people and effectively "planted his heart" here.

In 1988 Winnie became interested in the LDS church. He met Jeff and Darla Udall at the time of his conversion and developed a lasting 18-year friendship with them. They, in essence, adopted each other during that time. Winford became "Grandpa Winnie" to Darla and Jeff's children and they loved him very much. Winford was especially grateful to the 1st Ward of the LDS Church to which he belonged.

The amount of service and kindness given to Winnie was immeasurable especially after he developed health problems. He was and will be eternally thankful.

In addition, Winford grew to love and appreciate the staff at the Friendship House where he resided the last six years of his life. Linda, in particular, was so very kind and loving. Hospice of the White Mountains eased his pain and made his last days more bearable and is very much appreciated as well.

Winford left a legacy while in Eagar of having a kind heart and doing many many acts of service and kindness while he was able. He loved and was loved by many.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 4, at the Eagar Stake Center in downtown Eagar. Interment will follow at the Eagar Cemetery.

Burnham Mortuary of Eagar handled the Arrangements.
