James was born the son of David and Mary Allerdice. In 1845 he moved with his parents to Wisconsin. James enlisted on August 18, 1862 and was mustered into Co. F, 28th Infantry, Wisconsin Volunteers as a Corporal. He was discharged for disability on May 6, 1863.

James came to Blue Rapids, KS., in August, 1870. He was married to Miss Alice Mason of Stone Bank, Wisconsin, in April 1878. To this union were born two sons and two daughters, three of whom are Beatrix, Pearl and Alvin. James was a carpenter by trade.

He leaves to mourn his wife, four children, one brother and two sisters. Robert Hale Post and Relief Corps attended the services and escorted the casket to the cemetery.
