Born in Scotland, near the village of Creetown, at Bagbie farm, he was 19 years old when he told his parents that he wanted to go to America with his four older brothers. He had saved his money for the trip by trapping various small animals and selling the fur hides. The brothers all settled in Kansas , near Clearwater, Mulvane, and Wichita. He never lost his native Scottish brogue.
The following poem, written in his memory, was written by a grand daughter, Ruth Latchaw Wentling.
Grandpa has gone to his old highland home,To the land of the heath and heather,To the land of hills, of the rocks, and of homeWhere its always bright sunny weather. Our Grandpa has sailed on his Captain's own ship,To the shores of the rugged isle,Where his angel manned ship will soon find the old port,Without need of the sails nor the dial.Grandpa once crossed the blue and beloved sea,To the land of his bonnie wee lass, There he lived, and loved all, and helped all to the end, Regardless of wealth or class. But his soul has now sailed o'er a greater sea,O'er the beautiful sea of lifeTo the port of fair Heaven that waits cross the seaFor the brave who have weathered the strife,The Great Captain has called His own faithful one home,Cross the sea of sweet calmness and peace,Where he rests with the Maker of ships and men,In the land where the winds never cease. Our Grandpa has gone to his old highland home,To the land of the heath and the heather,Where he waits for the dear one he leaves across the sea Who will meet him in heavenly heather.
