John Lee Calhoun, Sr. was born in Dawson, Ellis County, Texas; one of 12 children born to the farm family of Sandy Calhoun (1863-1953) and Sumira (Roark) Calhoun (1875-1946). Sandy and Sumira were married and started their family in Ellis and Navarro Counties in Texas. By 1904 they had moved to Indian Territory in what is now Walker, Garvin County, Oklahoma.
