Rev. Charles G. Gilger, 83, of Lancaster, died Sunday, September 13th, at the Hospice of Lancaster County, Mt. Joy Facility. Born in Shamokin, PA, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Edna (McCloskey) Gilger. He was the husband of Fay L. (Brammer) Gilger, with whom he celebrated 57 years of marriage on August 29th.

He served with the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. During the final days of the war, he served as a radioman aboard the U.S.S. Shangri-La (CV38) in the South Pacific. Charles was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon (2 Stars), the American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal.

After the war, he graduated from Wheaton College and Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and later attended Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, New York where he earned his Master of Divinity degree. It was during his time at Moody Bible Institute that he met his wife, Fay.

Ordained in the American Baptist Church, Charles served as pastor to several churches in upstate New York from 1955 to 1967. In 1967, he moved with his family to Lancaster and worked 25 years for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. After retirement from DPW, Charles pastored at the Market Street Baptist Church in Harrisburg for several years.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lancaster, where he was an active participant in the life and work of the church over 40 years.

Charlie will be remembered for his love of gardening and his talent as a cartoonist and a photographer as well as his wry sense of humor. His passion for learning never left him and over the years he collected numerous books on everything from religion to comic books. He was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Susan, married to Brian Yealland of Kingston, Ontario, Dean, married to Sheila (Buck) Gilger of Abingdon, MD and Andrew, married to Audrey (Kurtz) Gilger of Lancaster, eleven grandchildren and one great grandson. Preceding him in death are three brothers, John Lauer, David Gilger and William Gilger.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his Life Celebration Service from First Baptist Church, 612 N. Duke St., Lancaster, PA on Thursday at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Dr. Joseph Faith and The Rev. Richard Hill officiating. Interment will be held at Mellinger's Mennonite Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Fred F. Groff Inc., 234 W. Orange St., Lancaster, PA, on Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. There will be no visitation held at the church. Military Honors will be rendered by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Lancaster County, 685 Good Dr., P.O. Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125 or to First Baptist Church of Lancaster, 612 N.
