Edward J. Behney, 75, husband of Eleanor (Pierce) Behney, died Monday at Mystic Manor Nursing Home after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Mr. Behney was born Jan. 25, 1914, at Harrisburg, Pa., son of the late Harry M. Behney and Helen (Wertz) Behney.
Mr. Behney was the former vice president of operations at Electric Boat.
He joined the Elco Division of Electric Boat in 1941. There he played a prominent role in the design and production of the Elco Patrol Torpedo Boats of World War II. The company turned out 398 of the PT boats.
He transferred from Elco in 1950 as chief engineer for PT Boat Design. He held various engineering positions at the Groton plant, advancing to chief mechanical and then chief design engineer in 1956. In 1962, Mr. Behney organized and was named manager of EB's first formal Quality Control organization. The following year, he became manager of manufacturing, and then vice president of operations responsible for purchasing, planning, industrial engineering and manufacturing. In 1968 he was appointed engineering director and later assistant to the general manager, where he was responsible for facilities expansion and design development of the Trident Land Level Ship Construction Facility. He assisted in facility construction before his retirement in 1974.
Mr. Behney later worked for Booz Allen Applied Research, of Bethesda, Md., supporting the U.S. Navy as technical director, LHA Shipbuilder's Claim. He was also a consultant for Specialized Systems Inc., Mystic.
The graduate of Pennsylvania State University, with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, began his career as an experimental engineer with the Lycoming Division of the Aviation Manufacturing Corporation, Williamsport, Pa.
He was a registered professional engineer in the state of New Jersey, and a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, American Society of Naval Engineers, and Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. He has served on the board of Mohegan Community College, and was a past member of the former Groton Shipbuilders' Federal Credit Union board of directors.
He and Eleanor Pierce were married at Bayonne, N.J.
Besides his wife, survivors include two sons, five daughters, one brother, and four grandchildren.
