By 1850, the family had relocated to Lake County, Illinois, where Comstock married Mary Hanley on October 13, 1858; they had five children.
At the age of 25, Comstock enlisted for Civil War service in San Francisco, assigned to the 2nd California Regiment in October, 1861. He was assigned to Camp Lincoln, established to keep peace between the Tolowa tribe of Native Americans and the miners and settlers of northwestern California. He mustered out of Company C, 2nd California Regiment on November 2, 1864 at the Presidio in San Francisco.
He continued to farm in the Barrington area after his service.
After the death of his wife, he married Virginia Howell on August 13, 1885, in Barrington.
Corporal George Comstock died on May 4, 1909, in Los Angeles, California. He is buried with his wives in Barrington's Evergreen Cemetery.
