Crossland, pastor of Asbury First United Methodist Church from 1932 to 1959. Born in Rochester on September 26, 1900, Ruth Helen was the second child of Bertha and Hilton F. Snider. Ruth was a woman of many gifts. Prior to her marriage to Weldon Crossland on June 9, 1938, she earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Rochester in 1935, and was engaged in cancer research at Columbia Medical Center in New York City when she and Weldon met. A gracious and generous hostess, Ruth Crossland made the parsonage a true adjunct of the church itself by welcoming the church family to her home for fellowhip, planning sessions, and spiritual support. She shared her husband's dream of a great Gothic church building, and traveled with him through Europe to see the cathedrals there. When the new Asbury Church with its soaring spire and beautiful stonework was dedicated, it was a high moment for them both! Ruth was untiring in her work for her church, and was active in community areas as well. she founded the Altar Guild whose function is not only to beautify the Altars of the church, but also to provide instruction and support for those interested in the history, architecture and liturgy of Asbury. She served on the boards of directors of a number of community organizations, and worked with the NAACP, the University of Rochester, the Department of Social Science and many other groups. A remarkable woman, Ruth Crossland was born with the century and contributed her gifts and talents to it. She is survived by two stepdaughters, Janet C. Barnard of Rochester, and Mary C. Moore of Little Rock, a brother, a niece and nephew, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
