Charles Frederick John Wittkop was born in Mecklenburg, Schwerin, Germany, February 9, 1832, and therefore at the time of his death was 79 years less one month old. He came to America in 1857 and since that time has been a member of St. John's church except two years, for in 1859 he went to Adrian, where he remained until 1861. On the 18th of November, 1859 he married Miss Wilhelmina Albrecht, of Adrian, who was his companion for over 43 years. Since 1861 he has lived on the farm about three miles south of town with his son Paul. To Mr. and Mrs. Wittkop were six children all of which are living. There are Mrs. Emma Leffien, Mrs. Louise Boldt, Mrs. Ida Hiser and Mr. Paul Wittkop, and all reside in the vicinity of Dundee.
The pioneer work which Mr. Wittkop had done began to show it's consequences as age approached, for more than 20 years ago his health was not the best, till he fell peacefully asleep last Monday morning January 9, about 1 a.m.
Beside his children, 15 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, his brother Louis, and one sister, Mrs. Sophia Pang,mourn his loss. Funeral was held from St. John's church, Wednesday January 11. The burial was in Oakwood.
