Mr. Haines was born in Berks County, PA in 1820, the only child born to Henry (1790-)& Mary (Hess 1798-) Haines. Henry received a meager education. In 1838 Henry married Elizabeth McGee (1817-1855) in Webster county, Pennsylvania, who bore him ten children, viz." Laird Howard (1842-1907), Mary Jane (1845-1862), William (1847-1865), John (1848-1928), Sarah Ellen (1851-1855), Frank Leslie(1852-1931), Robert S.(1853-1916), Barbara (1854- ), Charles (January 1855-1911), and Catherine or Kattie (1855-1929). Elizabeth (McGee) Haines died in April 1855, in Dakota, Stephenson,Illinois.
In 1856 Mr. Henry Haines married Miss Christiana Shirk, daughter of Andrew (1796-1883) and Elizabeth (Stoner or Steiner, 1813-1860) Shirk or Sherk, of Illinois. This latter union was blessed with seven children, viz: Cyrus Atlas (1856-1911), Sophia (1859-1913), Lincoln (1864), Mary Ada (1866-1925) Addie (1867), Patrick Grant (1873-1941), Wheeler (1876) and Sarah E. (1880-1885). Henry a pioneer of Webster county. He homesteaded and resided 160 acres on Section 12 Town 4, Range 9, Oak Creek Township.---
