Edward Earl Lane passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at his home in Sanger after an extended illness. He was born November 27, 1923 in Jacksboro, TX to Shafe Irl Lane and Ruby Turner Lane. After graduating from Jacksboro High School, he joined the Navy and served his country honorably in the Second World War.When the war ended he came to Denton to attend what was then North Texas State College, and in 1946 met Mary Jane Nichols. They were married November 26, 1949, beginning a life partnership that would span almost fifty-two years and produce four children, twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, countless friends, a legendary Denton business, and a legacy of respect, love and laughter that will live in the hearts of all who knew him.

Ed and Mary Jane were the proprietors of "Lane's Ice Cream" on Congress Street from 1948 till 1973, and during that span helped raise several generations of Denton High School students. Lane's was the kind of friendly place where all the kids went to hang out after school and even held pep rallies there, where Ed would start fixing your usual order from memory as soon as you walked in, and where nobody ever went hungry, even if they were a little short on cash.He made his own ice cream, and his hand-cooked hamburgers and "frozen malts" are still remembered with relish by many long-time Dentonites. Mary Jane and Ed are fondly remembered by many DHS alumni and were often invited to Denton High reunions, even hosting events for several reunions.

After Lane's closed, Ed went to work for the Lewisville Fishing Barge and later the Denton ISD for several years before "retiring" for good, although he still put in a full day at his farm in Sanger. After Mary Jane passed away in 2001, he moved there, to the place he loved best, where he had built his house with his own hands, and where he was most at home taking care of his cattle, receiving his many friends and hosting family gatherings.

Like so many of his generation, Ed was first and foremost a man of character, whose word and handshake were his bond, and who was a living example of the value of hard work, love of country, and love of his fellow man. But he had a mischievous sense of humor too – which he was more than happy to demonstrate to new acquaintances who weren't already familiar with his playful tricks. If you shook hands with him in the store, you were as likely as not to come away with a fistful of mustard while he pretended not to notice! And later he would laugh along with you while he told the story with a twinkle in his eye!

Ed was "Papa" to his grandkids – his proudest title, and the name by which everyone knew him best in later years. Papa, we love you and we look forward to seeing you in heaven with Meme… we know she was the first to meet you at the gate and is probably still showing you around and introducing you to old and new friends!

Mr. Lane, a member of the Methodist Church, was preceded in death in 2001 by his wife, Mary Jane Lane. He leaves behind four children:Eddie Lane, Rodney and wife Marlena Lane, Dwane Lane and wife Sheryl Kearby, and Jane and husband Greg Naugher; twelve grandchildren: Maegan Lane Soell, Perry Lane; Matthew, Jordan and Collin Morris; Susannah, Charlotte, Marinda and Abram Lane; J.J. Naugher Searcy, Lane Naugher and Julie Naugher Hawkins; four great-grandchildren: Owen and Ella Morris, Mary Jane Searcy, and Saige Lane Soell; as well as numerous relatives and friends.
