Napa Man Dies When Train Hits Truck Near Fairfield
FAIRFIELD- A Napan Richard Nolan Smith became the sixth traffic fatality in Solano County in 1973 when he was killed instantly Friday in a truck-train accident.
Police said Smith 22, of 4155 E. Third Ave. was killed when he attempted to beat a speeding passenger train across a Southern Pacific Railroad Crossing on Peabody Road at 1:45 p.m. Friday.
Witnesses told police Smith attempted to around the lowered barrier arms in the pickup truck.
The westbound amtrack passenger train, which was traveling about 60 to 70 miles per hour, according to police, plowed into the passenger side of the pickup which was traveling between 35 and 45 m.p. h.
Smith, accoding to police, was thrown clear of teh pickup by the impact. He was found lying 50 feet southwest of the corssing in a field, police siad, while most of the pickup landed 25 feet further on the field.
The bed of teh picjp flew off in the accident and lodged in the tracks.
Police said none of the tain's passengers reported suffering injuries in the collision. However, repairs had to be made to the front of the locomotive before it could be moved.
A native of Richmond, Smith received his early education in Martinez.
His family then move to Dinuba, whee he graducated from Dinuba High School. Earlier this year he graduated from Long Beach State University.
Smith moved to Napa four weeks ago and was living with his brother. He was employed by a landscaping company in Fairfield.
Survivors include his mother, Esther P. Dart and his stepfather, Donald K. Dart, both of Dinuba; three brothers, Dean of Napa; Randy and Douglas, both of Dinuba; one sister, Connie of Dinuba; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Anthony of Pennsylvania; and aunts and uncles.
He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.
Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of Richard Pierce Funeral Service. The Rev. Clarence Killion will officiate at the services.
Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Memorial Park in Concord.
