Benjamin P. Stoughton was born on 18 January 1805, in Weathersfield, Vermont and removed to Bennington Township, Licking County, Ohio, with his parents, in 1817. Since his Father, Nathaniel, his brothers, Nathaniel, Benjamin, Levi and Lemuel, also resided in “Bennington, OH,” he took residence near them.

In 1850, Ben , age 45, was living in Bennington Township, Licking County, Ohio and he was a Farmer, who lived on his own farm, which was valued at $3,000. He was married to Sophronia, age 40 and had three children in the house: Lumen, age 18; Cordelia, age 15 and Daniel, age 12.

Ben and Sophie were both born in Vermont and all three children were born, in Ohio.

In 1860, Benjamin , age 55, was living in Bennington, Ohio, and was still a farmer. He was living in the household with his Mother, Sarah, age 77, who was born in Vermont. He is “Next Door” to his son Lumen, age 29 and Lumen’s family: Wife Elizabeth, age 23. Lumen and Elizabeth are living with their son, Daniel, age 2.

In 1870, he was still residing in Bennington Township and continued his farming profession. He is now married to Catherine, age 35, a woman less then half his age and he has two new children: Emanuel Stoughton, age 16 and Daniel W. Stoughton, age 5. His mother, Sarah is now living next door, in the residence of, her Son-in-Law Samuel D. Shaw. This Samuel Shaw, was the Brother-in-Law, of Benjamin and married Ben’s Sister, Elizabeth “Betsy” S. Stoughton and he must have removed back to Ohio, from Iowa, since his daughter, Sarah J. Shaw was listed as born in Iowa.

Ben died on 8 July 1879, age 74 yr, 5 mo &20 D, in Lock, Knox County, OH and is buried in the Lock Cemetery.

He married:
1st - Sophronia Wright. She died, either before 1853 or before1863.
2nd- Catherine Sherman, either on 5 Mar 1853 or 5 Mar 1863. Born abt. 1835, in Switzerland; died 1907; buried in Lock Cemetery, Licking County, Ohio.

His children are:
1. Luman P. Stoughton, born 27 October 1831.
2. Cordelia Stoughton, born 2 May 1835.
3. Daniel Wright Stoughton, born 2 March 1838; died 1859; buried in Lock Cemetery, Licking County, Ohio.

With Catherine:
4. Emanuel Stoughton, born abt. 1854, in Ohio.
5. William D. Stoughton, born abt. 1865, in, Ohio.
