Chester E. Perry, 86, 1115 N. First Street, Bismarck, died May 19, 2000 in a Bismarck nursing home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jake Kincaid officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans' Cemetery, Mandan.
Visitation will be from 1-4 p.m. today, and 1-9 p.m. Monday, at Perry Funeral Home, Mandan, and for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Chester was born Oct. 28, 1913 in Bismarck, to William and Katherine (Clark) Perry. He was raised in Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1931. He graduated from North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo in 1935 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, business manager of the Bison, and in the ROTC. During his high school and college days, he was a stock boy at Richmond Bootery. After graduation, he had a job in the shoe business, not much demand for a chemical engineer. He became a partner in Richmond Bootery Shoe Company and operated the Shoe Mart for 56 years, one month and 11 days. Chet took time off from the shoe business to serve in the US Army during WWII from Oct. 28, 1942 to July 11, 1946. He was a member of the North Dakota National Guard from June 3, 1935 to November 1, 1962, retiring as a LTC.
Chester married Kathryn Alberta Kellam on Feb. 11, 1940 in Jamestown. Chet was very active in the Presbyterian Church. He taught Sunday school, junior high Presbyteens and sang in the choir. He was involved in Boy Scouts for 30 years and was Scoutmaster of Troop 6 from 1961 to 1973. He received the prestigious Silver Beaver Award in 1994. Civic affairs were also a passion of his; he was chairman and member of the Salvation Army Board, Lions Club and Folkfest Organizer, and an active promoter and member of the Chamber of Commerce. The "Wags" and birthday club were important parts of his life. These friendships lasted over 60 years. Erin and Roger, Matthew and Stephanie will long remember their grandpa for his camera and novice productions, his good humor and love for his fellow man.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; one daughter and son-in-law, Susan K. and John Aggson, Fort Morgan, Colo.; one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Patrick and Myria Perry, Bismarck; his grandchildren, Erin and Chris Hurley, Novato, Calif., and Roger and Cindy Aggson, Portland, Ore., Matthew and Stephanie Perry, Bismarck; and one great-grandson, John Riley Aggson.
Chester was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Delbert R. Perry.
The family prefers memorials to the Boy Scout Troop No. 6.
