Richard Howard Hagler Sr. was born on May 20, 1879, to James M. Hagler and Louisa Jane Helms in Sandy Ridge, Union County, North Carolina. Richard was the youngest of 11 known siblings.

By 1884, the family had moved to Sebastian County Arkansas, and by 1900, Richard had met Lucy Cox in Sebastian County. Richard and Lucy married on December 9, 1900. They had 3 known children:

Francis / Fred Hagler – Born on February 18, 1904 in Sebastian County, AR. Died in January, 1983 in Corpus Christie, TX. No record of marriage or children could be found. It is not known where he is buried.

Virgie / Vergie Hagler – Born in 1906 in Sebastian County, AR. No information found after the 1920 Census, when she was 14 years old. It is not known when she died or where she is buried.

Dorothy Loretta Hagler / Watson / Day – Born on November 1, 1910 in Sebastian County, AR. Married a "Watson" sometime in the late 1920's. No known children. Married Richard E. Day on July 8, 1965 in Monterey, CA. Died on Feb. 4, 1985 in Monterey. It is not known where she is buried.

By 1917, at the latest, Richard and Lucy were no longer living together. Have not been able to confirm if they divorced, however, on January 16, 1918, Richard married Pauline Grace Eatmon in Williams, Oklahoma.

Richard and Grace had 4 known children :

Lucy Gennell Hagler, May 14, 1919 – Sept. 14, 1978 (later known as Louise)
Lula Belle Hagler, May 14, 1919 – October 8, 1980 (Later known as Kathleen)
Richard Howard Hagler, Jr., Aug. 10, 1920 – July 19, 1992 (known as Ray)
James Allen Hagler, May 7, 1922 – June 2, 1992 (known as Allen)

Richard passed away in 1928, at the age of 49. He is buried in the Royal Oak Cemetery, in Panama, Le Flore County, OK.

Point of Interest: As with so many of the documents, even Richard's headstone is incorrect. It lists his birth year as 1893, instead of 1879.

Richard was believed to have died of a heart attack. No death certificate could be located in Oklahoma's Vital Records. In later years, Lula Belle (Kathleen) said she remembered her father giving her a kiss, sitting down, and dying. Another version from Lucy (Louise) was the children had been at church, and when they returned, their parents were arguing, and they were told to stay outside. Pauline Grace came out and told them to go get the neighbor, and when Lucy (Louise) looked through the window, she saw her father sitting in a chair, covered in blood. Ray would say in later years he remembered his father being very sick and coughing up blood. Those could also have been symptoms of tuberculosis or lung cancer. However, rumors also persisted for years that Richard had been poisoned.

As the children were very young at the time, and this must have been very traumatic for them, it's not surprising the context of their memories, and obviously without a death certificate, there is no way to ever know the truth.
