Mary E. Asmussen, 89, of Okanogan, Washington passed away on Friday, July 5, 1996 at home. Mary was born on November 18, 1906 to Alfred and Minnie (Vrundige) Smart in Malaga, Washington.

She graduated in 1925 and received her lifetime teaching certificate from Eastern Washington Normal (Eastern Wash. University) of Cheney after her first quarter of school.

Children were her first love and she taught Elementary School for 8 years before she married A. A. "Hub" Asmussen on December 29, 1932 in Okanogan. While raising her family she was active in the North Central Washington Fair including judging demonstrations and leader of the Mansfield girls 4-H Club for over 10 years. She was also active in the Okanogan County Fair. She returned to teaching in Mansfield in 1954 and retired in Okanogan in 1971. Some of the country schools she taught in were Mud Springs, Palisades, Clayton, Mansfield, Malott and Okanogan. Her many years of teaching were richly rewarded during her illness when several of her former students were involved in her care as professionals.

She was active with children in her love, care and concern including all her grandchildren. Mary was an active member of Rebecca Lodge for over 50 years, Okanogan United Methodist Church, Malott Grange, Carter Board member of the Okanogan Co. Home Health Organization and Okanogan County Fair.

She is survived by a son, Daryl Asmussen of Tonasket, WA.; two daughters, Norma Wainscott of Mansfield, WA and Joyce Pinnet of Woodinville, WA.; four sisters, Edith Smith of Spokane, WA.; Geneva Avenell of Mansfield, WA.; Mildred Glessner of Chelan, WA.; and Winnie McLean of Coulee City, WA.; one brother, Stanley Smart of Burbank, CA. Seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, July 9, 1996 at 1 pm at Barnes Elmway Chapel with Pastor Sam Buckingham officiant. Concluding services at Okanogan City Cemetery with Pastor Lindsey Ireland officiant. Memorials may be made to Okanogan Home Health Care. Barnes Elmway Chapel in charge of arrangements.
