John Thomas Carruthers, 89, of Middletown, MD, died Sept. 4
He was born Aug. 21, 1907, in Ashburn, son of the late Lorenzo B. and Martinia Burch Carruthers. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1926 to 1930, spending time in China. He was glassblower and a retired assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Maryland. He was the author of the book "Observations", and received the Service to Mankind award from the Frederick Noon Sertoma Club in 1993.
He was predeceased by his wife, Rachel Nourse Brown Carruthers. Surviving are his son, John Thomas Carruthers Jr.. of Potomac, MD; daughters Barbara Frances Montfort of Baltimore, MD, Patricia Ann Graving of Boonesboro, MD, Marjorie Rae Johnson of Potomac, MD and Helen Virginia Carruthers of Wilmington, NC; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grand children.
