Major League Baseball Player. Known by the nickname of "Buster," he was a right-handed pitcher who hurled for the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Rustles/Braves during his 9 season major league career. A pitching star at Ames College, he was purchased by the Cardinals from Omaha of the Western League in 1904. He made his major league debut on June 22, 1905 in a 10-2 loss to the Boston Beaneaters. Primarily a starter during his career, he would also occasionally pitch out of the bullpen in a "mop-up" roll. Plagued by both occasional wildness and having to pitch with very bad teams, he often posted very low ERA's. His best season was 1907, when he went 10-12 with a 2.74 ERA. His last professional stop was with Toronto of the International League, to whom the Braves traded him to on May 1, 1913 for Dick Rudolph and $4000 cash. Suffering from both acute Lymphangitis and Phebitis, he passed away from acute dilation of the heart on February 9, 1914 at the age of 32. During the course of his career, Brown accrued a record of 51-103 with a 3.21 ERA and 4 saves.
