"County in Brief - Chapman"

The community was greatly shocked Saturday morning to learn of the extremely sudden death of one of its oldest and most respected citizens, J. W. Abbott. Mr. Abbott was in apparently good health when he arose in the morning. Later he was suddenly seized with violent pains round the heart, death resulting almost instantly. He had reached the age of 79 years, but has been up to the time of his death in the best of health and spirits. With his demise goes another life that so valiantly served during the Civil war, he having served with Company c, 19th regiment, Iowa Infantry, from August 18, 1862 to July 10, 1865, when he received his honorable discharge. This leaves but three in the vicinity of Chapman that might be classed as Civil war veterans, and those are A. D. Randall, E. Aurand and P. Haddix. Rev. W. O. Samuelson of Valley had charge of the services and interment was made in the Chapman cemetery.
