On October 21, 1868, he married Caroline Albee in Grand Haven, Michigan.
Per the 1900 Census for Washington, District of Columbia, they were the parents of seven children with four living.
During the Civil War he was a Captain with the 69th Illinois Infantry.
In 1871, he received his Master of Arts degree from the University of Illinois.
