Samuel St John, the son of Seth and Sarah (Allen) St John, was born near East Hubbardton, Vermont on November 2, 1834 on the family farm. His middle name (Wheeler) was most likely in honor of his uncle Samuel Wheeler and his grandmother whose maiden name was Wheeler. Samuel grew up on his parent's farm and was the oldest of four children. Other members of the family included his brothers Allen and Guy, and his sister Sophia. After marrying Olive Parsons on September 8, 1857 in Hubbardton, Samuel established a farm in Rutland County near other farms developed by the extended St John families. He passed away on February 25, 1900 and is interred in the East Hubbardton Cemetery next to his wife Olive who passed away nineteen years later.
