Cevilius served with Union forces during the American Civil War. He served as a private in Company C, 171st Regiment of Pennsylvania Drafted Militia. He was 29 years old when he was drafted. At that time he was was 5 feet 8 inches tall, had a light complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. His occupation was farming and he was likely helping his parents operate their family farm. Draftees served for a term of nine months. His regiment was organized at Camp Curtain, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in November 1862. The regiment served in North Carolina and Virginia during the war. Cevilius contracted malaria in June 1863 and he stated he was a patient in the regimental hospital at Washington, North Carolina. The regiment was mustered out at Harrisburg in August 1863.

Cevilius suffered from the effects of malarial fever for the remainder of his life.

Cevilius married Susan R FOSBURGH on 24 Nov 1867 likely at Bradford Co., Pennsylvania where both families resided.
