HUME O ANNAN JR.

FORT ASHBY, W.Va. - Hume Opie Annan Jr., 77, of Fort Ashby, passed away Friday, May 7, 2004, at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Born on May 19, 1926, he was the only child of the late Hume Opie Annan Sr. and Donnell Dunbar Avirett Annan. He was also preceded in death by his stepmother, Vivian Lambert Annan.

As a boy, Mr. Annan lived on the West Side, and was raised by his grandmother, Sarah D. Avirett Thomas. In a contest among school children, Mr. Annan submitted the winning entry "Constitution" to name a new city park. A 1943 graduate of Allegany High School, he had been editor of the school newspaper, The Alcohi Mirror. Mr. Annan continued his secondary education at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., graduating there in 1944. Mr. Annan was awarded a scholarship to attend Princeton University, but he interrupted his education to serve as a Merchant Seaman from 1945 to 1947, sailing the North Atlantic. Thereafter, he returned to Princeton, graduating Phi Beta Kappa in 1949. Mr. Annan again served his country in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952. He later moved to Baltimore to work for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Maryland. During his 31 years at Blue Cross, Mr. Annan worked persistently to extend health benefits and developed the company's drug, dental and vision programs. He retired in 1981 as a vice-president.

Never forgetting his boyhood home in the Potomac Highlands, Mr. Annan returned frequently and purchased a small farm near Levels, in 1976. He moved back permanently in 1981, and later owned Jersey Mountain Orchards.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy, Fort Ashby; his daughter, Nancy Dunbar Annan Street and husband William David Street, along with two grandsons, Steven David Street and Patrick James Street, all of Annapolis, Md.; his son, Richard Opie Annan and wife Sandra Lee Annan, Palmyra, Va.; and three cousins, Sarah Avirett, Anne Williams Avirett Dilts and James Alfred Avirett Jr. ad ad Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m.

The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home, with the Rev. Edward C. Chapman officiating.

Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
