Virgil Garfield Simons, 77, Sturgis, died Sunday, July 12, 2009, at the Lippold Hospice Suite of the Sturgis Regional Health Care Center of pancreatic cancer.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Pastor Kyle Reinhiller and Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at Bear Butte Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Virgil was born June 12, 1932, in Sturgis to Garfield and May (Priest) Simons. He was raised on a ranch south of Enning where continued to ranch until 1996 when he moved to Sturgis. Virgil married Anita Cundy March 10, 1957. She passed away in December, 1971. He married Kay Eddy August 24, 1975, in Belle Fourche.

Virgil was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting elk for almost 60 years in Montana and the Black Hills. Summers found him and Kay fishing at Oahe for walleye and he especially enjoyed fishing in tournaments. Virgil spent many summers team roping and later took up golfing. He loved exploring the Black Hills trails on his four-wheeler. He loved the outdoors, from the plains to the Black Hills. He and Kay also spent many winters in Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Survivors include his wife, Kay Simons, Sturgis; one son, Kelly (Marcie) Simons, Fort Pierre, and their children, Jessica and Shay Simons; daughter, Karen Simmons, Sturgis, and her children, Anita and Jimmy Simmons; daughter, Krystal Simons, Fort Pierre, and her children, Roman, Emily, and Hailey Spaid. He had three stepsons, Alan Dahlman, Rapid City and his son, Ben Dahlman; Bryan (Laura) Dahlman, Gillette, Wyo., and their children, Janet Dahlman and Mitch and Clint Hackman; and Clark (Jennifer) Dahlman, San Diego, Calif., and their daughters, Spencer and Lauren Dahlman. He is also survived by one sister, Vera Denker, Caldwell, Idaho.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gary and May Simons, and two sisters, Shirley Arends and June Bauer.

A memorial has been established to Hospice of the Northern Hills.
