Rev. Michael Braun

Fr. Michael C. Braun, a priest of the Diocese of LaCrosse for the past 43 years, died Tuesday June 15, 2004, at Community Health Care Wausau Hospital, Wausau, Wis. Fr. Braun was born in Athens, Wis. on March 9, 1935, the son of Edward A. and Celia (Weix) Braun. His parents operated a gasoline station and the Ford Garage at which he worked for many summers during his schooling. He completed eight years of grade school at St. Anthony's in Athens in 1949 and graduated from St. John's Prep School in Collegeville, Minn. in 1953. After two years at St. John's University in Collegeville, he graduated with a degree in Philosophy from Holy Cross Seminary in LaCrosse, Wis. In 1957. He frequently participated in softball and baseball programs in the Athens and Marathon County areas during the summers. In 1961, he completed four years of theological training at St. Mary's Seminary & University in Baltimore, Maryland. He was ordained a priest by Bishop John P. Treacy for the Diocese of LaCrosse on May 20, 1961.

His first assignment was as an assistant pastor at St. Therese Parish, Schofield, Wis. from 1961 to 1965. In 1965, Bishop Frederick Freking asked that Fr. Braun begin teaching religion at Regis High School in Eau Claire, Wis. While there he headed the Religion Department for a number of years and "coached" the golf team. He also celebrated weekend Masses at both St. James Parish in Eau Claire and at St. Mary's Parish in Altoona. In 1973, Fr. Braun received permission from Bishop John Paul to begin teaching at Viterbo College in LaCrosse. He remained there until 1980. While serving as a religious studies teacher at the college, he became the first director of the Lay Ministry Training Program for the Diocese of LaCrosse. He also taught in this program for 27 years. He participated in graduate school at the Catholic University of America in Washington D.C. and St. John's University in Collegeville, Minn. He was awarded an M.A. in Theology and an M.A. in Religious Education from St. John's.

Fr. Braun was an elected member of the first Priest Senate of the Diocese of LaCrosse and also served on the Diocesan Board of Education. He was also a member of the Priestly Formation and Liturgy Commissions as well as the Board of Continuing Education of the Clergy.

Fr. Braun became pastor of St. Agnes Parish in Weston, Wis. In 1980. During this time he continued to conduct workshops and teach in various programs throughout the Diocese. After a three-month sabbatical at Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, in 1992, Fr. Braun volunteered to become pastor of four small parishes in southeastern Portage County. The four parishes were brought together into one parish under the name of St. Maximillian Kolbe. His last diocesan assignment was to St. Joseph Parish in Black River Falls, Wis. where
He also acted at the first Catholic chaplain at the new state prison. Fr. Braun was slowed somewhat by heart problems and surgery already back in 1983, and so decided to retire in November of 2001. He lived in an apartment at Holy Name Parish in Wausau, and he did weekend help-outs at various parishes in Central Wisconsin, but later assisted almost exclusively at St. Anne's Parish in Wausau. He maintained his passion for teaching by giving talks and short courses in theology in the Central Wisconsin area. He himself enjoyed school and continued to attend classes after retirement – especially at St. Norbert's College in DePere, Wis. In his retirement, he continued his hobbies of golf, model trucks and reading. He also continued to do some traveling – especially during the winter months.

Fr. Braun's father died in 1973, his mother in 1998. All 17 of his aunts and uncles are deceased. He is survived by his brother, David (Leona) of Stevens Point, brother Floyd (Sophie) of Athens, brother Roger (Mary) of Milwaukee, sister Margaret (Roger King) of Sturgeon Bay, and brother Paul (Janet) of Janesville. He has 16 nieces and nephews and 18 grand nieces and nephews.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM, Friday, June 18, 2004, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Athens. Rev. Lyle Schulte will preside along with members of the priest support group. Rev.
