James F. "Pat" Patterson, 81, of Caruthersville, died May 5, 1989 at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston. Born Sept. 7, 1907 at Portageville, he was the son of the Rev. Hillary and Mary Poole Patterson.
He was a Missouri state senator for 22 years until retiring in 1972. He served as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and the last four years he served, he was president pro tem of the senate, the third highest ranking office in the state.
He attended Southeast Missouri State College. He is a former secretary of the Caruthersville Chamber of Commerce. He was active at the local and national levels in Boy Scouting programs. He was secretary of the Tennessee-Missouri Bridge Commission and assisted in the lengthy effots which resulted in construction of the I-155 Mississippi River bridge near Caruthersville. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Caruthersville, where he for many years served as deacon, choir director and superintendent of the Sunday school program.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mrs. Marybelle Gaddy Patterson of Caruthersville; One daughter, Mrs. Betty Jo Thompson of Hazelwood, Mo.; One son, James R. Patterson of Sikeston; Two brothers, M.W. Patterson of Springfield and T.H. Patterson of Ukiah, Calif.; Five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were May 7, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, the Rev. Ron King and the Rev. Ira Singleton officiating, with burial in Little Prairie Cemetery, Dean Funeral Home of Caruthersville in charge.
