Edward T. McLaughlin, 60 of 620 S. Hamilton St., former clerk at the Jefferson County Savings Bank and one-time insurance broker, died at 3:32 Sunday afternoon in the Mercy Hospital, where he had been a patient since Jan. 20. Death was attributed to a liver ailment and followed an illness of about three years.
The funeral will be Wednesday morning at 10:30 from the Cummins Funeral Home and at 11 in the Holy Family Church. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Mary P. Hurd McLaughlin: four children, Mrs. Howard E. (Mollie P.) Quimby, Whitesbororo, Thomas C. McLaughlin, Norristown, Pa., DAvid B. McLaughlin, a graduate student at Clarkson College, Potsdam, and John D. McLaughlin, a student at Jefferson Community College; four grandsons and a sister: Miss Mildred E. McLaughlin, 319 Flower Ave. E.
Three sisters predeceased him. They were: Edna, who died in infancy, Miss K. Irene McLaughlin, local public schoolteacher, who died here at the age of 39 on Oct. 23, 1937, and Miss Marion W. McLaughlin, a music teacher, who died here at the age of 64 on July 6, 1960.
Mr. McLaughlin was born in Watertown Feb. 2, 1911, a son of the late Edward T. and Katherine E. Courtney McLaughlin, who lived for years at 131 S. Massey St., next to St. Patrick's Church.
After his graduation from the Watertown High School in 199, Mr. Mclaughlin was associated with the Agricultural Insurance Co. for four years until March 1933, when he joined the late Omar A. Hine in the general insurance business of Omar A. Hine, Inc., as vice president.
After more than two years with the Hine firm, he engaged in a similar line of business under his own name in june, 1935. In October 1936, he became associated with the Jesse C. Ayers, Inc., another local general insurance firm; became president in 1937, when he purchased half the interest, and took over sole ownership when he bought the other half in 1940.
For a year and a half during World War II he served i nthe U. S. Navy, being discharged in October, 1945, after a year of duty as storekeeper, first class, on an oil refueling tanker in the Pacific. He then resumed business as president, treasurer and controlling stockholder of the Ayers company.
He became assistant treasurer of the Welch-Walton Insurance Agency in August 1950, when that firm took over the business of the Ayers firm from Mr. McLaughlin. The late Lawson G. Walton was president of the Welch-Walton company.
On Feb. 15, 1954, the insurance firm of Seaver & Peck, Inc., headed by Bruce A MacDonald, purchased the Welch-Walton Insurance Agency, the two firms were consolidataed and Mr. McLaughlin became vice-president of the new corporation, known as Seaver, Peck, Welch & Walton, Inc.
The corporation was re-organized on Aug. 1, 1958, under the name of MacDonald-Jones, Inc., which became the successor to Seaver, Peck, Welch & Walton. The officers were Mr. MacDonald, president and treasurer; John E.

Jones, vice president and secretary, and Mr. McLaughlin and Earle L. Spink, vice presidents.
Mr. McLaughlin severed his connection with MacDonald-Jones in April, 1959, at which time he again entered the insurance business under his own name.
He continued that business until June, 1961, when he sold out to Ray Linehan, head of the Ray Linehan Co., Inc., left the insurance business and became a clerk at the Jefferson County Savings Bank. He retired from the bank's employ about four years ago.
Mr. McLaughlin married Miss Mary Parker Hurd, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dewey H. Hurd of Watertown on Dec. 27, 1939 in the chapel of St. Patrick's Church.
He was a member of the Holy Family Church; a member and former trustee of Watertown Lodge of Elks, 496; a former member of Watertown Council, 259, Knights of Columbus, and once was active in the chamber of commerce as a member of its fire prevention committee.
