Dr. Cline was born near the small town of Walshville, Montgomery County, Illinois on 16 Jan 1844. He was educated in the public schools of Illinois and in the Litchfield, Ill. academy. He died in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, USA on 11 Jul 1921.

He was admitted to the Southern Illinois Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in September, 1863 and in June, 1899 the Portland University conferred upon him the degree of doctor of divinity for scholarship and ability as a minister of the gospel.

He was a member of the Loyal Legion and the Grand Army of the Republic. He served in Company D, 7th Regiment Illinois Vol. Infantry, Company E, 1st Regiment Illinois Calvary, and Battery B, 1at Minnesota Heavy Artillery. He was honorably discharged in July, 1865, as a second Lieutenant. He was a member of the George Wright Post of the Grand Army of the Republic. He was known as the "fighting parson" and a "militant preacher". He had a brilliant record as a soldier and officer in the Civil War.

He married Anna Elizabeth Miller in Wasioja, Minnesota on 23 September 1863. He is survived by his widow, four daughters--Mrs. Annie Farley, Mrs. Grace T. Johnston, and Miss Agnes Cline all of Portland, and Mrs. Frances M. Miller of Gresham. Also, three sons--G.L. Cline [Gus Lincoln] of Los Angeles, W.D. [Wesley Dean] and Thomas D. Cline of Portland. [He was preceded in death by sons Horace Allyn Cline and Ewing Maurice Cline.] Death Cert. #1578.
