Southard Parker was in the US Consular Service since 1904 when he was 23. He committed suicide in 1914. At that time, he was US consul at Harbin, China, and had held that position since August 1912. He had been hospitalized for three weeks and seemed to be making a good recovery when he shot and killed himself. In addition to Manchuria, Southard had held consular positions at Gera and Leipzig in Germany and in South America.
