John McDowell Dies; Rites Friday Morning

Funeral services for John McDowell, 88 years old, retired merchant and member of the G. A. R., who died yesterday at his residence, 1818 Harvard Ave., will be held tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock in the Butterworth Mortuary, with the Rev. B. P. Richardson presiding. Mr. McDowell had resided in Seattle thirty-five years, and formerly owned a dry goods store at Sixth Avenue and Pike Street. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Martha McDowell, two daughters, Mrs. Lela Sullivan of Seattle and Mrs. J. C. Parsons of Vallejo, Cal., and a son, Lloyd W. McDowell of Tacoma.

John Baptiste Augustine Monroe McDowell was the eldest of five children born to Robert B. McDowell and Archange Robidoux. His parents had several stores along the Mississippi and he spent his youth in Galena Illinois, St. Louis Missouri and Keokuk Iowa. He was a soldier during the Civil War. He married Martha Alice Epler on 05 Apr 1865 in Edwardsville, Madison Co., Illinois. They lived in Missouri where their three children, Lela, Mary and Lloyd, were born. The family was living in Whitman, Washington in 1887 and later moved to Seattle. John had a store and Martha had a milliner shop.
