Obituary of Lieut. Thos. D. Urmston, 12th U. S. Regulars
Killed while discharging his duty, on the 1st of Oct. near Petersburg, Va., Lieut. Taghead D. Urmston of the 12th Regulars, U.S.A.
This noble young man, son of Rev. N. M. Urmston of Highland Co., was born in Connecticut in 1837.
Early devoted to God by his parents, he gave himself to His service in 1850, under a profession of his faith and united with the Presbyterian Church.
In this tenant , as in the social circle, he was ever the Christian gentleman.
Impelled by the purest principles of patriotism in 1861, he gave up a profession that promised both honor and profit to enlist as a private in the regular army.
He passed through unharmed the perils of the Peninsula Campaign, the battle of Antietum, Gettysburg, Walden and many others, being promoted to a Lieutenancy for his good conduct and fell at last while repulsing an attack of the enemy, and sealed his devotion to his country.
A father, brother and sister mourn for the death of this heroic young soldier cut off in the prime of his manhood. They mourn but without hesterics for they knew in which he trusted and that he is not lost but only "gone before."
