He married Mary E. Sanford Feb 24, 1861 in Gilmer Co. Georgia.

During the Civil War he received a gunshot wound to his right ankle in battle against Union forces in June 1863 near Maryville, Tn. He was furloughed home but because of his severe wound he was unable to rejoin his command. He was crippled for the rest of his life.

He died while he was away from home visiting relatives in the Tail's Creek community in Gilmer Co. Due to the bad weather conditions at the time he was buried at the nearby church cemetery. Over time the location of his grave became unknown. His gravesite is unmarked.
