Henry was born in what was Culpeper County, Virginia, but that part now is Madison County, Virginia. Henry was a private in the 2nd KY Volunteer Regiment, during the War of 1812. He married Susannah Maggard on 24 Mar 1814.

Henry was a second great grandson of the organist and composer Johann Christoph Bach (1642–1743), who was a first cousin, once removed, of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750). Johann Christoph Bach was in his time the most famous member of the musical Bach family, renowned throughout Germany for his virtuosity at the organ.
