Son of John & Elizabeth (Blitch) Hurst

Cemetery:
Walter E Scott, Ed. S.
It is near Hiltonia which is in Screven County between Sardis and Sylvania. To my knowledge, there are no photos of it, and I don't believe that it was ever transcribed either. Back around 1996 or so, a teenaged deerhunter was talking about seeing the grave of Charles B. Hurst (he was the first minister and namesake of Hurst Baptist Church) near his deer stand. Anyway, that is how it was finally rediscovered after all of these years. Besides Charles B. Hurst and his wife, Dorothy Ann Lambert, being buried there, Dorothy's parents are there as well. It seems like there are only two or three other marked graves, though I'd imagine that over fifty people were originally interred there.

Going towards Hiltonia on the Perkins-Hiltonia Highway, turn left onto an old two-rut road just up the hill from Six Bridges Hunting Club (this used to be Trinity Church). Follow this road for about 1/4 of a mile and the cemetery (now chain-linked fence is around it) will be on the left, and the old Skinner House where George Washington breakfasted in 1791 is on the right. It's a shame that they have let this historically important structure simply fall down.

The plantation near Hiltonia (between there and Girard which is a few miles due east of Sardis) would have been Millhaven. North of Millhaven towards Girard is where the Hurst family lived (they'd moved from upper Effingham and Bryan County around Blitchton about 1810), though my g-g-g-grandfather's younger brother, Charles B. Hurst, a Baptist Minister, married Dorothy Ann Lambert, daughter of Sarah Streigles and William Lambert, and they lived west of what is now Hurst Church. North and west of Millhaven, where Ellison's Bridge Road runs into Murray Hill Road, is where the Ellisons have lived for about 200 years now. Ellison's Bridge Road runs all the way back into Sardis from the point where it runs into Murray Hill Rd. Murray Hill Rd deadends into the Millhaven Highway just north of Jerusalem Church, which is one of the oldest churches in that area. The Streigles family are a mixture of the French Huguenots and Austrian Salzburgers who established New Goettingen near Stony Bluff, and the Lambert (Lambrecht) family were Salzburgers as well.
