Obituary in Killeen Daily Herald:

"Entered into rest March 3rd, 1904, Mrs. Amanda Fletcher, in the 67th year of her age.

Mrs. Fletcher was born in Montgomery County, Alabama, and was married to a Mr. Thornton and came to Texas many years ago. They were in affluent circumstances but with the death of Mr. Thornton, came adverses and his widow was left to rear, unaided, her six little children. Bravely did she battle with poverty, but armed with energy, pride and motherly love, she soon succeeded in surrounding her family with the comforts of life, and thanks be to her careful training and noble example, not a child departed therefrom, but all became respected, honorable, well-to-do men and women, who are all married and have families of their own. Her children are: Dock Thornton, of Coryell; Joe Thornton, Sheriff of Bee County; Ed Thornton, of Killeen, Mrs. Mattie Gatlin, of the territory; Mrs. Annie Moore of Youngsport; Mrs. Ouida Hutson, of Cleburne.

Twenty-three years ago she was married to Mr. James Fletcher who has been dead 9 years. One child, Jimmie Fletcher, was born to this union, now the wife of W. A. Stephens, of Cleburne.

Mrs. Fletcher was a consistant member of the Christian Church. The cause of her death was due to heart disease, and for the past year her sufferings were intense, but she never murmured or complained, but bore her sufferings with Christian patience and when the death angel appeared, was willing and ready to go. She has been a resident of Killeen for 19 years, a possessor of a cheerful disposition, a model housekeepr, generous, hospitable, ever ready to administer to the comfort of others. She counted her friends by the score.

The small toil worn hands, were folded on the loving, loyal heart. Oh, those hands, what a story they tell. How eloquently each line and wrincle speak of the long, hard battle with life, not a selfish line in them.

Her children rise up and call her blessed and nobly did they repay her by surrounding her declining years with every comfort and loving care.

Mrs. J. B. Fitzpatrick, Killeen, Texas, March 7, 1904"

A card of thanks accompanied the obituary:

"We wish to extend our sincere thanks to those who so kindly rendered their assistance during the illness and death of our precious mother, Mrs. Fletcher, and especially to the Doctors that gave her relief. We feel that no effort on their part was spared for her recovery, but that was beyond human skill or hope.

While it is hard to be separated thus from Mother, let God's will be done.

If ever opportunity presents itself, we will gladly return the favors bestowed upon her by the people of Killeen and Youngsport, through this trying period of ours.
