Gottfried was born in Messow, Pommern, son of Christian Friedrich and Maria Elisabeth (Buss) Buss. He was one of three brothers and one sister who emigrated to Wisconsin. His brothers were August Friedrich Michael Buss and Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Buss. His sister was Charlotta Henriette Buss Lierman.
He married Ernestine Wilhelmine Korth on 06 Jul 1860 at St. Stephen's, Concord, WI. They had 13 children.

1. Emilie Ernestine Wilhelmine b. 06 Dec 1858; d. 22 Jan 1908. She married August Friedrich Berg 30 Mar 1876

2. Mathilda Albertine Wilhelmina b. 12 Dec 1862; d. 13 Mar 1923. She married Johann Friedrich William Maasz 12 May 1885

6. Franz Carl Frederick b. 22 Aug 1869; d. 07 Jul 1943. He married Alvina Helene Amanda Kollath 12 Oct 1897
