Alphonse R. Batt Dead at 79

Alphonse R. "Al" Batt, 79, 947 South Clinton St., Defiance, died at his residence Monday morning, March 2, 1987, following a brief illness.
Born in Washington Township, Defiance County, on March 27, 1907, he was the son of Anna (Hetz) and Edward Batt.
On June 23, 1931, he was married to Helen Justinger, and she died April 9, 1963.
A graduate of Ney High School, Mr. Batt served two terms as Defiance city service director and retired in 1977 from the Ohio Department of Transportation.
A member of St. John's Catholic Church in Defiance, where he served as an usher, he was a life member of the Knights of Columbus #1039 of Defiance, treasurer of the Dad's Club of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12 and a member of the Defiance County Law Enforcement Association, Defiance Eagles and the Emerald-Auglaize Township Fox Club.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. James (Carolyn) Leonard of Saegertown, Pa., Mrs.Jeffrey (Patricia) Walter of Defiance, Mrs. Thomas (Kathleen) Boyd of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Mrs. Stanley (Mary) Cox of Defiance; seven sons, Paul of Napoleon, Victor, Eugene and Frederick of Defiance, James of Oakwood, Dennis of Hosington, Kansas and Thomas of Bryan; 37 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ambrose, Virgil and Carl, all of rural Defiance; and two sisters, Mrs. Ed (Irene) Shindler of Ney and Mrs. Casmir (Catherine) Herman of Edgerton.
Preceding him in death besides his wife, were three sons, Jerome in 1956, Ronald in 1976 and Harold, who died in infancy; two grandchildren; four brothers, Raymond, Walter, Bernard and Dan; and a sister, Donelda Wagner.
Services are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church. Burial is to be in Riverside Cemetery, Defiance.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. tonight, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 8 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Lawson-Roessner Funeral Home, Defiance, where the Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Preferred memorials are to the church or a charity of the donor's choice.
