John was a cowboy and their honeymoon trip was made on horseback with a pack outfit over the mountain to Rangely, where John was employed by a cattle company, and where they lived several years.

Five children blessed this marriage: Charles Paton, a baby that died right after birth, Minta Ethel, William Faye, and John Franklin who died at age of eight.

Around 1900 John homesteaded what is now the 7-K Bar Ranch on Douglas Creek, where the family spent the summers until John died on December 15, 1913.
