Gladys Friend Bowman 85, died at Comanche Co Hospital in Coldwater, April 17, 1994. She had been in ill health for several years due to pulmonary fibrosis and rheumatoid arthritis of the lungs.
She was born Dec 16, 1908, near Coy in Woods Co, Okla to Charles and LuElma Bowen Friend. She attended country school in the Coy community and received her GED at age 60.
A lifetime resident of Kansas and Oklahoma, she had lived in and around Coldwater since 1945. She was the retired owner and operator of the Bowman's Cafe, which was on Main St for many years.
She married H. R. Vanderhule August 167, 1930. On Feb 13, 1941, she married Merle Bowman in Woodward. He died Feb 18, 1992.
She was a long-time active member of the Assembly of God Church in Coldwater. Church and a strong faith in God have been very important to her through the years. She was also active in Sunday School and was available for whatever was needed to be done, and faithfully attended services at church and Bible study. She taught Sunday School classes for years and served on the Board.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Chester and Nobel, and three grandchildren.
Survivors include; three daughters, Dovie and Jim Stringer of Hutchinson, Lois and Bob Hoffman of Wichita, Juanita and Roger Rumsey of Wichita; five sons, including two sets of twins, Ronald and Cathy Bowman of Lancaster, Calif, Donald and Linda Bowman, Guymon, Jim and Judy Bowman, Topeka, Richard and Kathy Bowman, Hutchinson, Robert and Barbara Bowman of Dodge City; 18 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. She also leaves one brother and three sisters-in-law, Cecil and Lorena Friend of Freedom, Dorothy Friend of Freedom, and Fern Harlan, Wichita Falls, TX,; also other relatives and many, many friends.
Funeral service was held Wednesday, April 20, 1994, at the Coldwater Christian Church with Revs Faye Thurman and Virginia Carthrae officiating. Hatfield-Prusa Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Organist Many Anna Purcell accompanied Bob, Dale, Marlan and Kent Hoffman as they sang " Come Spring, Land of Living and Suppertime" .
Marlan Hoffman sang " The Lord's Prayer".
Pallbearers were grandsons, Mike Stringer, Jeff Stringer, Monte Stringer, Bob Heitmann, Dale Hoffman, Marlan Hoffman, Kent Hoffman, Ashley Bowman, Larry Latham, Randy Bowman, Kevin Bowman, Ryan Bowman, John Rumsey, and Paul Bowman.
Memorial may be sent to the Assembly of God Church in care of the mortuary.
