Leonard was born Nov. 1, 1920, in the town of Kossuth, son of the late Jacob and Mary (Nikolai) Schermetzler.
On June 17, 1950, he married the former Rosalia Kloos in Rozellville.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalia of Manitowoc; four daughters and three sons-in-law; six sons and daughters-in-law; 23 grandchildren, six stepgrandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Adeline Leick and Marie Mayer, both of Manitowoc, and Eileen and Edward Staudinger, Reedsville; and two brothers and four sisters-in-law, Donald and Jeanette Schermetzler, Bernard and Marie Schermetzler, Marcella Schermetzler and Anna Schermetzler, all of Manitowoc. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jacob and Norbert Schermetzler; two sisters, Helen Schultz and Irma Huber; four infant brothers and four brothers-in-law.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and 10 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Camillus Janas O.F.M. Entombment to follow at Knollwood Mausoleum, Highway 310, Manitowoc. Graveside military rites will be accorded by the VFW Otto Oas Post No. 659.
