Myrtle Beach - Helen Vereen Ford peacefully joined her Lord on Friday, October 2, 2009 while a patient at Grand Strand Healthcare in Socastee.

She was born January 30, 1912 in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, and was the daughter of the late Ronald Gordon Vereen and Estelle Limehouse Vereen, and the granddaughter of one of the founding fathers of Horry County, John Fletcher and Lucy P. Vereen. During her early childhood, her family moved to Latta to establish businesses and to farm in that community. Mrs. Ford attended Columbia College in South Carolina, and received her business degree at Woman's College (UNC-G) in Greensboro, N.C.

Helen was the wife of the late Paul Travis Ford Sr., originally of Lake View, and was a resident of Dillon for 50 years. A Charter member of the Main Street Methodist Church in Dillon, she was the first President of The Builders Sunday School Class, and a member of the Wesleyan Circle and Joy Club. She was a member of the Palmetto Book Club, Iris Garden Club, past President of the Garden Club Council, member of various bridge clubs, and a Boy Scout Den Mother for 10 years.

Survivors include one son, Paul Travis Ford Jr. and wife, Merlin, of Myrtle Beach; one daughter, Lynn J. Morris and husband, Earl, of Apex, N.C.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn V. McSwain; and brothers, R.G. Vereen Jr., the Rev. LaFon C. Vereen, Carlisle M. Vereen, and Thomas Lawton Vereen.

Mrs. Ford last resided at Covenant Towers, on Little River Road in Myrtle Beach, for 15 years. Active at the Towers, she participated in church services and in the Seabells Bridge Club.

Family visitation will be held 1 p.m. Monday, October 5, 2009 at Cooper Funeral Home, 209 Black Branch Road, Dillon, with services to follow at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Evergreen Perpetual Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Main Street Methodist Church in Dillon, or to Socastee United Methodist in Myrtle Beach.

Cooper Funeral Home is assisting the family.
