JAMES MADISON COLE

Grandad Cole "Civil War Veteran" grew to manhood at the place of his birth. He enlisted as a private in Company C - 91st Infantry of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry on July 28, 1862 and was discharged June 24, 1865.
In January of 1868 he was married to Anna Dora Stone. The Coles had six children - Amos P Cole, Walter R. Cole, Robert Arthur Cole, Jame F. Cole, William A Cole and Mrs. Grace Bush.
He came with his family to Wyoming in 1882. He had a homestead on the Belle Fourche River between the J.P. (Jerry) Bush and R.L. (Richard) Bush ranch. The river crossing there is still known as Cole Crossing.
He was postmaster at Hulett, in the mercantile business for awhile, and acted as Justice of Peace several times. Granddad Cole lived in the house now owned by Myrtle Rathbun. He lived alone for many years. He was always interested in politics, loved to play cards and read a great deal of the time, especially newspapers.
He was 90 years, four months and thirteen days old when he passed away.

Civil War Record:
Enlisted July 28, 1862, at age 18 in Company C, 91st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry.

James Madison Cole, a son of Silas W. Cole and Elizabeth Huston, was born in Scioto county, Ohio, October 3, 1845. He obtained his education in the schools of the county, and was raised a farmer.
He married Dora Stone, daughter of William and Susan Stone. The children of this marriage were: Pearl Amos, resides at Hulett, WY, an architectural draftsman; Arthur, who resides at the same place, a miner; Grace, married to Richard Bush, resides at Hulett, WY; Albert, resides at Hulett, WY, a machinist; Walter and Floyd, school boys. Mr. Cole is engaged as a stock raiser, and he owns a section of land and keeps a herd. The location of his home is 3,000 feet above the sea.
He is a republican and an Odd Fellow. He emigrated to Illinois in 1875, and was there until 1876 at Windsor, Illinois. Then he went to Lenox, Iowa, in 1878. He was there until 1883, when he went to Brokenbow, Nebraska. He took up Government land there. He was appointed Infirmary Director and remained until 1888 and then went to Hulett, Wyoming, where he has remained.
Note: 1900 U.S. Census shows the James Cole family in Canyon City, Fremont County, Colorado, Roll 23, Page 205. By January 1908 they were back in Hulett, Crook County, WY.
