Jasper and Anna Clara Hughes already had two surviving children when Maryetta V. Hughes was born in Portland, Indiana. The Hughes family saw a promising future working in the oil fields and in 1918 moved to an oil camp in North Eastern Oklahoma. Maryetta grew up as the third of seven surviving children who were active members of the Methodist church and all became successful adults. After graduating from Sperry High School, Maryetta worked as a clerk in a small store where she met Robert "Bob" Rowe, a tobacco salesman making calls on small stores. Talking about Bob, Maryetta always smiled and said she was "overwhelmed" by the energetic, fun loving young man. After they were married the young Rowe family lived briefly in Durant, OK then moved to Cushing where their only child, Bobby Dan, was born. Recognizing Okmulgee was a vibrant growing town, Bob moved his family here and opened the "Rexall Drug" on the ground floor of the Commerce Building on the town square. While Bob served as manager and pharmacist, Maryetta kept the books and managed the cosmetic and sundry sales while Bobby Dan made deliveries on his Cushman motor scooter. During their marriage Maryetta and Bob were active in the community and enjoyed traveling. After a long illness, Maryetta Rowe passed away on October 6, 2009 at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob in 1992 and her son Bobby Dan in 2000. Maryetta Rowe loved Okmulgee, the First Methodist Church, and especially loved the people of this town. Services will be held on Friday, October 9th, 2009 at 1pm at the First United Methodist Church in Okmulgee with Reverend Craig Denslow officiating. Burial will follow in the Okmulgee Cemetery under the direction of the McClendon-Winters Funeral Home.
