John E. Boyer, 84, of York, died Thursday, March 4, 1999 in Aurora. He was born Jan. 12, 1915, near Bayard, to William C. and Vera Gladys (Chroninger) Boyer.
He attended Bridgeport, Nebraska Public Schools and graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1933. John was a member of the CCC's (Civilian Conservation Corps) and worked on many projects including the communities of Chadron, Oshkosh, and Red Cloud.
He attended Peru State College where he participated in football and track, graduating in 1939. He then taught and coached in DeWitt and O'Dell.
John was a veteran of WWII serving as a crew chief in the Army Air Corps, stationed in England and Scottland. Immediately after his service he was the Veterans Service Officer for Morrill County.
From 1948 to 1963 he taught and coached in the York Public Schools. He was particularly proud of his role as a driver education teacher, and served as the President of the State Drivers Education Assoc. He later taught in Omaha and Hampton Public Schools. In 1978 he retired and resided on the family farm located west of York.
He was married on Jan. 12, 1943, at Paterson, N. J. to Alice E. Simmons of York. He was an active leader in the Boy Scouts and a member of the Bradshaw United Methodist Church.
He is survived by two sons, John E. (Lora) Boyer, of Manhatten, Kas., and Tom (Margaret) Boyer of Fairmont; daughters, Mary (Phil Waters) Boyer of York and Martha (Larry) Fuller of Palisade, Colo.; seven grandsons, Jonathan (Jayne) Boyer of Iowa City, Iowa, Tommy Boyer of Moscow, Idaho, and Joe Boyer of Manhatten, Kan., Michael Fuller of Palisade, Colo., Rob and Matt Waters of York; one granddaughter, Candice Boyer of Fairmont; great-grandchildren, twins, Lauren and Ryan Boyer of Iowa City, Iowa; brothers, William C. Boyer Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., and George C. (Bonnie) Boyer of Cypress, Calif.; one sister, Lucile (Joe) Amateis of Bridgeport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Alice in 1987, two sisters and a granddaughter, Marla Fuller.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at the Bradshaw United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jaclyn Hoy officiating. Burial was in Plainfield Cemetery west of Bradshaw.
